Competing at tournaments in East Lansing, Mich. (U.S. Junior National Figure Skating Championships), and Jamestown, N.Y. (Eastern Section Figure Skating Championships), skaters made their mark in their respective divisions.

Andrew Torgashev, 10, of Coral Springs, was looking to medal higher after placing third in his prior Junior National appearance.

Torgashev outdid himself this time by earning a gold medal in the Juvenile Boys Division. His “secret weapon” was adding a double axel with high difficulty and including better footwork.

“Always listen to your coaches,” said Torgashev, who has a rigorous weekly training regimen. “If you make a mistake, you work even harder.”
